Extra planning matters most when temperatures approach or drop below 40°F.

Before Pouring

Prepare the site and mix plan.

  • Do not pour on frozen ground.
  • Clear snow and ice before placement.
  • Consider hot water in the ready-mix order.
  • Discuss accelerators and calcium chloride limits.
  • Have blankets, tarps, or enclosures ready before the truck arrives.
Protection

Keep heat in and weather out.

Cold weather concrete succeeds when the crew protects the slab after placement, not just during delivery.

Use thermal protection

Cover fresh concrete with blankets or tarps to retain heat during early curing.

Watch enclosure heat

Temporary enclosures and heaters can help, but combustion heaters need proper ventilation to protect the concrete surface.
